World Book Day

Wizardry and Wonder – a Day of Booky Brilliance at Gamesley Primary School

Assembly felt very exciting on Thursday. Instead of children dressed in their smart blue jumpers, the hall was filled with witches and wizards, caterpillars and bears, giants and dogs and even a handful of Oompa Loompas! The school uniform hasn’t officially been changed; the children and staff were dressed as their favourite book characters for the 20th World Book Day event.

Celebrated in schools across the UK, World Book Day promotes a love of reading and it gave the children at Gamesley School the perfect excuse to immerse themselves in book based activities all day. Sarah Woolley from Glossop’s Bay Tree Books spent the afternoon with the infant classes, reading stories to them by their favourite authors, Eric Carle, Julia Donaldson and Dr Seuss. Leading up to the day, children took part in a Design a Book Plate competition. The winning designs – one in each year group – will be stuck in the front of every book given to children as a prize for the next year.
